Inter Football Cup: Celebrating Diversity Through Sports

The HSE Inter Football Cup—mini-football championship, which has already become a tradition, was held on the open lawn of the Energia Stadium on May 19, 2024. This year, a team of international students from the St. Petersburg campus also joined the fight for the Сup.

More than 100 international students from various countries came together for a day of spirited competition and cultural exchange.

The event was opened by the Director for internationalization Kirill Kisel and a tutor from the Department of Physical Training Artem Emelyanov. Together they welcomed the players and football fans and wished for an open and fair fight.

Participants showcased their skills and sportsmanship on the field, embodying the values of teamwork and friendship. The Inter Football Cup not only celebrated athletic talent but also highlighted the power of unity and mutual respect among individuals from different backgrounds.

Teams made up of players from Africa and Latin America, Middle East, European and CIS countries proudly represented their faculties, adding a colourful and vibrant touch to the tournament. Through the universal language of football, players connected beyond borders, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

All participants and fans expressed excitement and enthusiasm about the tournament, beautiful weather, and worthy opponents.

Alfred Essel, Ghana, from the Faculty of Social Sciences participated in the Inter Cup for the second time and appreciated the consistently high level of organization. He regretted that due to a larger number of participants, the teams have pauses in games, but this is the price of the growing popularity of the tournament. ‘I am graduating this year, but I have applied for the PhD programme at HSE. And I’d love to take part in HSE Inter Cup 2025 as a postgraduate!’ he mentioned.

Francisco Ruiz from Venezuela came to HSE under the mobility programme as part of the cooperation agreement with Yanka Kupala University of Grodno. He noted that his Belarusian university also hosts similar sports competitions, but the HSE Inter Football Cup impressed him with its scale, the level of preparation, the number of participants—which contributes to higher competition among teams.

His teammate from the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, Sergio Terron from Spain, confirmed that a high organisational level is inherent in HSE University both in extracurricular activities and in studies. ‘HSE is a very technological university with different working platforms and various online options. Together with high-class teachers it all makes HSE a very nice academic experience. I am happy to be here,’ he said.
