Mathematical Physics at HSE University Goes International

The HSE University International Laboratory for Mirror Symmetry and Automorphic Forms and the Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications (BIMSA) held a joint online conference on mathematical physics. The results of the laboratory research presented at the event will be published in leading academic journals.
The conference was held as part of the three-year joint research project ‘Geometry and Physics’ under the International Academic Cooperation of HSE University initiative.
Eleven reports were presented by renowned scientists in the field of mathematical physics and prospective mathematicians.
The following researchers presented reports at the conference:
- Andrey Marshakov, Professor, Head of the Joint Department with the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences at the HSE Faculty of Mathematics
- Alexey Litvinov, Head of the Scientific School named after I.M. Krichever, who worked closely with the laboratory during the megagrant period
- BIMSA Professor Hao Zheng
- BIMSA Associate Professors Xinxing Tang and Babak Haghighat
- Mikhail Alfimov, Senior Research Fellow at the International Laboratory for Mirror Symmetry and Automorphic Forms
Andrey Kurakin, Junior Research Fellow at the International Laboratory for Mirror Symmetry and Automorphic Forms, Pavel Osipov, Research Fellow at the laboratory; Maria Matushko, Research Fellow at the Steklov Mathematical Institute; and BIMSA postdocs Lingyan Hung and Xiaoyue Sun also participated in the event.
Valery Gritsenko
Valery Gritsenko, Head of the International Laboratory for Mirror Symmetry and Automorphic Forms, and academic director of the joint programme on the Russian part, emphasised the relevance of the delivered reports. The results of the latest research projects by laboratory staff presented at the conference will be published in three articles in academic journals indexed in the Nature Index used in the ShanghaiRanking.
Valery Gritsenko also noted that cooperation with the Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications of Tsinghua University allows laboratory staff to present their latest results on one of the world's best scientific platforms. The conference also helped deepen cooperation with Chinese colleagues Xinxing Tang and Babak Haghighat, who have already worked in Moscow in 2024 and 2025.
It's worth noting that Babak Haghighat, German mathematician of Iranian origin, Associate Professor at BIMSA, was a student of the famous German physicist Albrecht Klemm (Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn), with whom Valery Gritsenko collaborated on international projects in France and Germany.
‘Our cooperation with the Beijing International Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications helps us not only find new research perspectives, but also develop active academic contacts with all international colleagues,’ summed up Valery Gritsenko.

Biologists Discover Unique Properties of MiR-93-5p MicroRNA in Prostate Cancer
Researchers at the International Laboratory of Microphysiological Systems of the HSE Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology investigated how different isoforms of the same microRNA influence gene function in prostate adenocarcinoma. The study found that in some cases, microRNAs can reinforce each other’s effects by targeting and suppressing the same genes. This finding offers a fresh perspective on the molecular mechanisms underlying tumour development and on the search for disease biomarkers. The results have been published in PeerJ.
Scientists Develop Bacterium-Sized Microlaser
An international team of researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed microlasers that emit deep-ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 255 nanometres. The devices operate at room temperature, and the smallest of them measures just two micrometres in diameter—roughly the size of a bacterium. These microlasers could be used in sensors, spectroscopic systems, photonic chips, and communication devices. The paper has been published in Optics & Laser Technology.
HSE Develops App for Assessing Phonological Processing in Children
Researchers at the HSE Centre for Language and Brain have developed a new digital tool for assessing children's phonological processing skills—the ZARYA (Sound Analysis of the Russian Language) test battery. It is the first standardised application in Russia designed to provide a fast and reliable assessment of children's ability to distinguish speech sounds, retain them in working memory, and perform phonemic analysis. The app runs on Android tablets and smartphones and is available for download from RuStore. Details of the test validation have been published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.
Researchers Discover How Spelling Errors Slow Down Reading in Russian
Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University–St Petersburg have shown that words that are frequently misspelled are processed more slowly by readers, even when presented with the correct spelling. The researchers confirmed this effect for the first time using Russian-language materials and found that response speed is most strongly linked to how confidently individuals can distinguish the correct spelling of a word from an incorrect one. The study has been published in The Mental Lexicon.
Scientists Discover Why Europium 'Misbehaves'
Europium is a rare-earth metal responsible for the pure red glow in displays and other luminescent materials. For a long time, however, it refused to emit light when surrounded by certain organic molecules known as acylpyrazolone ligands. Chemists have now uncovered the reason: in europium complexes with these ligands, a 'black window' appears—a charge-transfer state in which the energy absorbed by the ligand is dissipated as heat rather than emitted as light. Understanding this mechanism opens the way to designing more efficient red-emitting materials for displays, fluorescent thermometers, and chemical sensors. The results have been published in Dalton Transactions.
HSE Economists Reveal How the Wage Gap Emerges Among Vocational School Graduates
HSE researchers examined the careers of 600,000 graduates of Russian secondary vocational education programmes and found that at the start of their careers, the gender wage gap reaches 23%, doubling after three years. This disparity is largely due to male and female students choosing different occupations when enrolling in vocational schools. These were the findings made by Sergey Roshchin, Natalya Yemelina, and Ksenia Rozhkova from of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences. The article has been published in Educational Studies.
HSE Researchers Make Aldehydes Perform Dual Function
Chemists from HSE University have discovered a way to carry out a reductive addition reaction without using an external reducing agent. Instead, the required 'resource' is supplied by the aldehyde itself, one of the reaction participants. This approach helps prevent unwanted side reactions, reduces toxicity, and simplifies the production and synthesis of organic molecules, including those used in the manufacture of medicines. The study has been published in Journal of Catalysis.
Education in a Changing World: Russian–Chinese Dialogue in Beijing
How are universities, vocational education systems, and researcher training programmes evolving in response to new challenges? These questions were at the heart of the international forum ‘Reconfiguring Education in a Changing World: Russia–China Dialogues on Higher Education, Skills, and Research Training’, held in China in mid-June. The event was jointly organised by the HSE Institute of Education and the Graduate School of Education of Peking University, which hosted the forum on its campus.
Tabular Data Anonymisation Solution for Safe Use in AI Systems Developed at HSE University
The AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science has developed a tabular data anonymisation service designed to prepare corporate datasets for use in analytics and AI applications. The solution can identify personal data in structured datasets, apply consistent and reproducible anonymisation rules, and generate the artifacts required for quality control, auditing, and subsequent use of data in secure environments.
