Moscow Mathematical Journal Named Most Influential Russian Journal in Mathematics of 2017
The recipients of the annual Web of Science Awards are the most influential scientists, scientific organizations and publications of the year. The Moscow Mathematical Journal has made it into the top quartile in the subject area of mathematics and was announced by jury members to be the most influential Russian scientific journal of 2017.
The Moscow Mathematical Journal is published jointly by the HSE's Faculty of Mathematics and the Independent University of Moscow. The publication is distributed throughout the world by the American Mathematical Society. The editorial staff aim to bring together various fields of mathematics and to create synergies between them. The criteria for an article to be selected include its significance to other studies, and the authors’ motivations.
The Moscow Mathematical Journal has been in the Web of Science Core Collection database for four and a half years already. The database divides each subject area into four quartiles. The Moscow Mathematical Journal was ranked in the top quartile for the subject area of mathematics, numbering among the most respected journals.
An additional measurement is the ‘Article influence score’. This is a calculation of the normalized impact factor and is used to compare journals in different disciplines. The Moscow Mathematical Journal was ranked second among all Russian journals.
‘The Moscow Mathematical Journal sets itself apart from the large number of Russian publications: it is a young, post-Soviet journal. It is published in English, and less than a third of the articles are Russian-affiliated. Furthermore, the publications which are affiliated with the publishing organizations – HSE and the Independent University of Moscow – make up about 50 of 639, indexed to date in WoS’, explains says Ivan Sterligov, director of the HSE Scientometrics Centre.
In addition to experts from the strongest mathematics centres in Russia (MSU, Steklov Mathematical Institute of RAS, ITEP, etc.), mathematicians from institutions such as MIT, the University of Chicago, Kyoto University, La Sorbonne and the Weizmann Institute are also published in the Moscow Mathematical Journal. According to WoS, it has published work from a total of about four hundred organizations from 47 countries.
‘There are many articles which are frequently cited. For example, Generators and Representatives of Functors in Commutative and Noncommutative Geometry has been cited 214 times according to WoS and 484 times according to Google Scholar’, adds Ivan Sterligov. In addition, the journal has a very low number of self-citations. According to WoS, of more than 4 thousand articles citing the MMJ, only 129 were among those published in the journal itself.
The Moscow Mathematical Journal is currently the leading Russian mathematical publication which is known throughout the world. Less than 600 citing articles are with Russian affiliation, and an impressive 1329 with American affiliation. The journal has been cited in more than 800 different publications, and the authors of these citing articles work in 1300 different organizations in 80 countries across the globe.

HSE Scores Best Results among Russian Universities at International Olympiad in Uzbekistan
At the Third Al-Khorezmi International Mathematical Olympiad (AKHIMO), held at Urgench State University in Uzbekistan, students from HSE University's Faculty of Computer Science scored best results among participants from Russian universities.
