HSE on Coursera: This is only the start
The 11 educational courses completed in the first year of HSE's cooperation with Coursera won an audienec of 300,000. The courses' lecturers talked about how they succeeded in doing this at a round table at HSE.

On November 19-20, 2014 HSE hosted a conference on Global Governance: Nominal, Real and Alternative Structures. The conference was largely focused on the paradigm shift in geopolitical and geoeconomic structures of the modern world, as well as the underlying causes and long-term implications of such changes.
Joint MA Programmes: A View from Italy
A press conference on further development of the double degree programme took place at the University of Tuscia, Viterbo, Italy. University Rector Alessandro Rugieri said that, in Italy people understand how important cooperation with Russia is – in particular cooperation with HSE in Nizhny Novgorod – which is home to over a million residents and plays a key role in the country’s economic life.

In 2014 the working group of the Department of History of Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg won the university competition and received institutional support for the international research project ‘Comparative Historical Studies of Empire and Nationalism’. Ronald Grigor Suny is Charles Tilly Collegiate Professor of Social and Political History at the University of Michigan, Emeritus Professor of Political Science and History at the University of Chicago and Senior Research Fellow at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg. He talks his research interests in history and the International Research Project ‘Comparative Historical Studies of Empire and Nationalism’.
New Technology in Education: the Russian, American and Chinese experience
The HSE University District in Perm hosted the first International Scientific-Practical Conference to discuss the new stage of development of the University−School Cluster, investment in contemporary pre-school education and innovations in education in China and the US. HSE’s Deputy Academic Supervisor, Professor of Economics, Lev Lubimov, Honorary Professor at the Teaching College, Washington University (Seattle) Steven T. Kerr (via online conferencing), Director of the HSE Institute for Educational Studies, Professor Irina Abankina and Reader at the Chinese Academy of Pedagogical Research, Tsian Xiaoyang all took part.
Finding a Balanced Approach on Internet Governance
Peter Major, vice-chairman of the Radiocommunication Advisory Group of the International Telecommunication Union and chairman of the Group on Information Systems of the ITU Radiocommunication Bureau at the United Nations, is one of the world's leading experts in the field of Internet Governance. Foresight Becomes a Part of Government Policy
Foresight, a system of future studies in science and technology, is being institutionalized, brings together different levels of ‘scanning’ the future, and is branching out into new sectors. These trends were among those experts identified at the 4th annual international academic conference ‘Foresight and STI Policy’, organized by the HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK), which opened on November 6.
International iPIPS Research Evaluates Children’s Success — not Countries’
On October 28, the HSE Institute of Education seminar discussed international comparative research project – iPIPS (The International Performance Indicators in Primary Schools). It examines child development on enrolling in school and during their first year of studies. The research was carried out in the UK, and HSE Institute of Education specialists adapted it – and for the first time carried it out in Russia.

Uniting Science and Film
The film Alive Inside by American director Michael Rossato-Bennett discusses the surprising results of treating Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders with the help of music. The director first got the idea to make the film after he met Dan Cohen, a volunteer at a nursing home.
